How To Maintain Polished Concrete Floors?
Regular maintenance is important to keep polished concrete floors looking great.
If dust mop the floor daily with a microfiber pad to keep dirt particles off the floor. If wet mopping the floor, always use clean water and clean mops. When wet mopping, use a neutral floor cleaner formulated to suspend the dirt particles so they can be more easily removed.
When dry mopping, use a rubber broom or an electrostatic duster to remove any fine dust that may have accumulated since you polished your polished concrete floors (or last swept them). Use non-waxed furniture pads or paper towels for best results. Make sure these materials are lint-free before using them--otherwise you'll end up leaving unwanted fibers on your polished concrete floors.
When sweeping polished concrete floors, push the dirt toward an area where it can be removed more easily. Do not try to sweep up the dirt with one long stroke or you will most likely scratch your polished concrete floors. If you have a standard broom at home, go over the floor again with a vacuum cleaner so that all of the dust is collected and not redistributed onto your polished concrete surfaces.
Dust mop only polished concrete surfaces only--other unfinished areas should be mopped daily to prevent slips and accidents. Floors that are used by foot traffic can safely be mopped once every three days using neutral pH cleaners. Thoroughly rinse your mop after each mopping job because any remaining residue can cause problems later on.
Mop polished concrete floors with a pH-neutral cleaner and always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Always rinse polished concrete flooring thoroughly after mopping to prevent water stains and build-up on your polished concrete surfaces.
Wiping polished concrete floors is only necessary when using cleaners that require rinsing or if there are dirty spots or spills near your polished concrete flooring. Use only lint-free cloths for this job, such as cheesecloth, old cotton sheets, open weave mops or microfiber towels. Start at one end of the polished concrete floor and work toward the other end cleaning small sections at a time before moving on to different areas of your polished concrete floors. When you get close to finished with one area, go back to the beginning and finish that area before progressing forward. Do not worry about streaks, they will dry eventually.
If polished concrete surfaces are allowed to become dirty or dusty, you should steam clean them when needed. Steam cleaning can remove almost any ground-in dirt or spots on polished concrete flooring by forcing the moisture downward through your polished concrete floors for cleaning purposes. Always make sure you follow all manufacturer's instructions carefully when using this type of equipment. When finished applying the cleaner to your polished concrete surface, wait until it has penetrated into any stains or spots then gently scrub with a damp sponge mop in order to better remove stubborn dirt particles from polished concrete surfaces. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after completing this step and allow polished concrete surfaces to dry completely before walking on them.
If polished concrete floors become extremely dirty or water-stained, hire a professional to clean and restore your polished concrete surfaces. Polished concrete is an expensive surface to have refinished so this should not be taken lightly. If polished concrete surfaces are damaged in any way, there may be no choice but to replace the polished concrete flooring completely instead of attempting to repair it.
Work out any kinks in your mopping technique by practicing at home first so you don't ruin polished concrete surfaces when cleaning polished concrete floors for real later on. This will allow you to get used to using your equipment and learn how much pressure is appropriate for polishing your polished concrete floors without causing damage or scratches that cannot be repaired.
If polished concrete floors become slippery, clean them with a solution of vinegar and water. This is an excellent way to remove any build-up of ground-in dirt and grime without harming the polished concrete surfaces. Rinse polished concrete surfaces thoroughly with fresh water after you have used this cleaning technique on polished concrete flooring. Allow polished concrete surfaces to dry completely before walking on them again to prevent slipping and falling during re-entry into your home or workplace. To further protect polished concrete surface from damage due to normal foot traffic, apply floor wax for polished concrete regularly once every two months or as needed depending on the amount of foot traffic in your home or business.
